In 2021, Wildlands Network received funding from the National Wildlife Refuge Association to develop a red wolf outreach video that helps explain that the red wolves in eastern NC are more help than hindrance on the lands where they currently roam. Deer populations increased during the same time period that the small red wolf population grew. Red wolves help decrease the number of coyotes that have shown up in the past few decades in eastern NC. They help control predators like raccoons that prey on ground-nesting game bird eggs like the Bobwhite Quail which is in decline. There is positive interest by the general public in knowing that this uniquely American species is back in its historic range making its rightful contribution to our North American wildlife heritage in and around Alligator River and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuges.
